One of our biggest problems with our van is that we have a high top. And being off the grid and having limited space in the van meant that we needed a roof rack. But we couldn’t find a roof rack to fit our high top.
So we decided to try and build our own. Sabina being able to weld was a massive advantage fro this. We came up with an idea on a piece of paper and measured all the details on the van to be able to do this.
We knew we needed it the whole length of the van due to our solar panels and we also wanted space for storage and maybe sitting on in the evening.
We made the roof rack out of steal as it was a lot cheaper and easier to weld. The down side to this is that it was heavier than aluminium but we thought that it didn’t matter too much.
After a couple of hours we had this welded together and ready to weld on the mounts to the van.
We had to modify the attachment to the van a little to make them more stable but we now have a strong sturdy roof rack with solar panels and decking on.
The whole roof rack only ended up costing us £80 compared to buying one for £600
